The trend took off in Asia and Russia earlier this decade. PlayFirst isn’t the first casual game company to explore micro-transactions. And more than a third of the transactions that “Hometown Hero” customers have made have been for $5 or less, proving that there’s a market for these micro-transactions. So far, the experiment has been a modest success: About 3.5 percent of the customers who have downloaded the game have spent something on it. PlayFirst charges $4.99 for each game pack and less than a dollar each for virtual items such as clothes for their characters.
